GrandThanks Event

On Saturday 26th September 2026, we hosted a free Grandparent Event at Craftea play café, bringing grandparents, parents and children together to celebrate family relationships and the special role grandparents play in family life.

Families enjoyed a range of intergenerational activities, including play, crafts, dancing, photography and a fun dance competition. Families created personalised photo frames and had photographs taken together, with digital copies provided afterwards so they could complete their keepsake.

Grandparents were also celebrated with thank-you flowers and grandparent-themed prizes, recognising their contribution to family life.

The event provided a relaxed and welcoming space for families to spend quality time together, create memories and celebrate connections across generations.

Her Space – Summer Holiday Project

Her Space was a free summer holiday programme delivered by Communitea Wellness CIC in 2026, providing children, young people and families in and around LS7 with creative, social and wellbeing activities in a welcoming community environment.

Funded through Leeds City Council Community Committee fund, the project was designed to reduce barriers to accessing positive holiday activities, particularly for families experiencing financial or social challenges.

What we delivered

We delivered 6 free holiday sessions, exceeding our original target of 5 sessions. Activities included:

  • Plaque making
  • Plaster figure painting
  • Plant pot decorating and succulent planting
  • Clay workshops
  • Chia seed house making
  • Candle making and an end-of-summer celebration

Across the programme, there were 111 bookings, with approximately 90% of available places filled. Families were able to enjoy creative activities alongside play, role-play and opportunities to socialise.

The impact

Her Space created opportunities for children and families to build confidence, develop creativity, make connections and spend quality time together.

Feedback from participants was particularly positive:

  • 12/12 participants said they felt more confident trying new things.
  • 12/12 said they felt creative.
  • 12/12 reported opportunities to socialise and feel connected to others.
  • 10/12 said they made new friends or connections.
  • 11/12 reported an improvement in their overall wellbeing.
  • 11/12 said they would definitely recommend the activities.

Repeat attendance also demonstrated strong engagement, with 5 family groups becoming regular attendees and 2 families attending 5 of the 6 sessions.

Creating an inclusive space

A key strength of Her Space was the flexibility of the activities. Children who were less interested in crafts could enjoy role-play and imaginative play at Craftea cafe, allowing children of different ages and interests to participate in a way that suited them.

The project also helped build lasting relationships with local families and provided valuable insight into the demand for accessible, affordable creative and wellbeing activities.

Our learning

The project helped us understand how to make future activities even more inclusive and effective. We learned the importance of appropriate group sizes, additional volunteer support, accessible feedback methods and planning for challenges such as extreme summer weather.

Most importantly, Her Space demonstrated a clear local demand for free, welcoming and creative activities for children and families.
